You might think seeing is believing, but tell that to Amenábar, writer/director of this dazzling thriller, which toys with our perceptions to exquisitely torturous effect. Initially, it appears that playboy César (Noriega) has it all: money, looks, girls. One night at a party, however, eager to escape jealous Nuria (Nimri), he strikes up a conversation with Sofía (Cruz), and soon realises he's in love. After one chaste evening together, it all goes wrong: Nuria is waiting outside, offers a lift, then deliberately drives off the road. She's killed, but he survives with a face so horribly disfigured he needs a mask. His hopes of getting back together with Sofía seem slim, especially since he's now facing a possible murder charge. Will this nightmare never end? Actually, it's only just beginning, as Amenábar adds layers of information overload, altering the picture from noir-ish poser to latter-day "Beauty and the Beast", and eventually to head spinning sci-fi mode. What holds us through the revelations are the sheer chutzpah with which Amenábar and his cast deliver them, the emotional imperative of the material and the fascinating way it touches on concepts of interior/exterior worth, personal responsibility and phenomenology. This is so smart, mischievous and stylish, you'll instantly want to see it again.

There are 50 doors in the house. Grace (Kidman) locks each one behind her, and insists the servants do the same. The curtains must be kept closed at all times. Her two children, Anne and Nicholas, are photo-sensitive, Grace explains: allergic to the sun. They live in an isolated Jersey manse, praying for the day Grace's husband will return from WWII, with only the domestic help for company: Lydia (Cassidy) is a mute, Mr Tuttle (Sykes) busies himself around the grounds, while Mrs Mills (Flanagan) seems unimpressed with her new employer's ways. It's to the redoubtable Mrs Mills that Anne turns when her mother refuses to countenance her stories of a mystery interloper, a lodger who makes himself at home without ever showing his face. Reminiscent of Jack Clayton's Henry James adaptation "The Innocents", this intelligent chiller relies on atmosphere and suggestion rather than gross-out gore. It's a surprise just how confident and controlled Amenábar's first Hollywood venture turns out to be. Subtle, too. Absence makes the heart beat faster: the absence of light, the corporeal absence of loved ones. Shrewdly cast, Kidman is pitch perfect. It's a clammy, ingenious film, one of the best studio movies of the year.

Ramón Sampedro (Javier Bardem) wants to die. He’s not a depressive; indeed, his world-view’s pretty positive. Literally, however, it’s also terribly restricted: for nearly three decades, since an accident left him a quadriplegic, he’s been confined to his bed, with just books and the sight of the Galician hills outside his window to stimulate his fertile but frustrated imagination. He’s tired of immobility, of being a burden to sister-in-law Manuela (Mabel Rivera) and her family, and an object of pity to others; he’s even more tired of the Spanish authorities, whose refusal to allow him an assisted suicide means he can’t attain the dignity in death he feels he’s denied in life. Maybe lawyer Julia (Belén Rueda) can help; certainly she seems more usefully objective than adoring local Rosa (Lola Dueñas), who mostly tries to persuade Ramón to carry on.
Amenábar’s fine multi-award-winner recreates a real-life case famous in Spain not only because of the Galician ex-sailor’s battles against government and church, but also because of his published memoirs. For international audiences the main attraction will surely be the hugely engaging, very expressive performance of a near- unrecognisable Bardem. More than anything else, it’s his unflashy expertise that does justice to Sampedro and his cause. Though the script, direction and other performances are all sensitive, assured and respectful, the camera pyrotechnics, the hackneyed hints of the hero’s irresistibility to women, and the overall button-pushing slickness ensure that, were it not for Bardem, this would be a superior ‘uplifting’ weepie, with the manipulative limitations that entails. Rueda, for example, is a tad too lovely, down to her picturesque perspiring; and while the film’s full of neat details about Galician life, it’s so keen to tap tears it seldom transcends stock types. Still, it’s a polished, thought-provoking, poignant melodrama, and Bardem is superb.
